Presented by TEDxBreckenridge, in partnership with Keystone Science School and Summit Fire & EMS. Join us for a fascinating look at wildfire — not just as a threat, but as a force our forests actually need.
We live in one of the most beautiful forested landscapes in the country — and one of the most fire-prone. But what if the fires we fear are also essential to the health of the ecosystems we love? This Salon explores the surprising science of wildfire: why forests evolved to burn, how fire shapes the ecology of our mountain communities, and how experts balance letting fire do its work while keeping structures and people safe.
Hannah Ohlson is a Fuels Specialist with Summit Fire & EMS, where she leads wildfire mitigation efforts across Summit County. Before joining Summit Fire, she served on U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crews and Helitack teams — some of the most demanding roles in wildland firefighting. She’s also a certified Burn Boss, overseeing prescribed burns that help our forests stay healthy. In early 2026, Hannah was chosen to receive the Wildfire Mitigation Award from the International Association of Fire Chiefs — the highest national honor for wildfire preparedness and mitigation work.
An eye-opening talk from Hannah followed by small-group discussion, where you’ll connect with neighbors and fellow curious minds to ask questions, share perspectives, and rethink what wildfire means for the forests and communities we love.
Bring the whole family! Kids (ages 4+) can enjoy hands-on wildfire science activities by Keystone Science School and a fire truck tour with Summit Fire & EMS firefighters. A kids ticket is required to participate — space is limited.
